A Month of Dyeing Classes at Baaad Anna’s


Dye Your Own Yarn: wools & silks

When: Thursday, June 3rd OR       Saturday June 19th One Day only
Time: 10am – 5pm   (6.5hours plus 1/2 hour break)
Cost: $75 – $90  (+ gst) sliding scale
Instructor: Janna Valle

This is a full day dyeing workshop which introduces acid dyes on protein fibres (wools and silks). Students will explore immersion dyeing, hand-painting and resist techniques as well as over-dyeing and colour mixing with primary colours to achieve a variety of results.  Minimum 4 and maximum 6 students.

Materials Needed: $15 for gloves, mask and dyes for this class is included in the class fee.150 grams of 100% wool or silk yarn or roving and can be purchased at Baaad Anna’s.  It can be 50g of each or 100g of one fibre. 50G of a coloured 100% wool or silk yarn or roving (do not bring dark colours like royal blue, black or dark brown.  You may also bring extra wool or silk yarn or roving if there is time leftover to dye more.

Dyeing with Mineral Vat Dyes: Cottons, Linens & Silks
When: Friday June 4th OR       Friday June 18th One Day only
Time: 10am – 4:30pm   (6 hours plus 1/2 hour break)
Cost: $75 – $90 (+ gst) sliding scale
Instructor: Janna Valle

This class is a full day workshop which introduced dyeing with mineral vat dyes. Students will learn how to prepare their own vats safely and then experiment with dyeing silk and cellulose fibres with them achieving various values of Golden yellow and grey – perfect for spring!  Students will also learn to discharge on their yarn creating dynamic variegation.  Minimum 4 and maximum 6 participants.

Materials Needed: $15 for gloves, mask and dyes for this class is included in the class fee. 200 grams of cotton, linen or silk yarn can be purchased at Baaad Anna’s.  It does not need to be one kind of fibre, having different fibres will achieve different results which can be fun to play with.  You may also bring extra fibre if there is time leftover to dye more.

This class is a full day workshop which introduces dyeing with fibre reactive dyes. Students will learn how to prepare their own dyes safely and then experiment with dyeing silk and cellulose fibres achieving a variety of vibrant colours. We will cover immersion dyeing as well as hand-painting on skeins and colour variegation for diverse results. Minimum 4 and maximum 6 participants.

Materials Needed: $15 for gloves, mask and dyes for this class is included in the class fee. 200 grams of cotton, linen or silk yarn can be purchased at Baaad Anna’s.  It does not need to be one kind of fibre, having different fibres will achieve different results which can be fun to play with.  You may also bring extra fibre if there is time leftover to dye more.

Painting, dyeing and printing on silk scarves

When: Friday, June 11th
Time: 10 – 4:30pm (6 hours with 1/2 hour break)
Cost: $75 – $90 (+ gst) sliding scale
Instructor: Janna Valle
This workshop introduces dyeing painting and printing on silk scarves with acid dyes. Students will learn how to safely prepare dyes for dyeing and thicken dyes for painting and printing. You will learn dye mixing and colour theory as well as steam setting to achieve vibrant colours on silk which are light and wash-fast. Minimum 4 and Maximum 6 students.

Materials Needed: $20.00 of class fee includes all supplies needed: 2 silk scarves, dyes for workshop, gloves and mask.

Reverse Applique: Dynamic Portraits
When: Saturday, June 12th OR       Thursday June 24th One Day Only
Time: 10 – 6pm  (8 hours with 30 min lunch break)
Cost: $75 – $90 (+ gst) sliding scale
Instructor: Janna Vallee

Create a dynamic portrait using a chromatic colour pallet to create depth and elegance. Students will be encouraged to use embellishing techniques like embroidery, faux couching and foiling. The portraits are be based on photographs, so for best results I require that your image be emailed to me for feedback and size manipulation. I will bring your photo, in the desired format, to the class.  8 hour classes include dyeing fabric in a chromatic golden-yellow or grey colour pallet with mineral vat dyes. Minimum 4 and Maximum 6 students.

Materials Needed: $15 unless you bring you own fabric in which case you should email Janna (info@jannamaria.com) for fabric requirements. This class requires that each student supply their own sewing machine.An 8X10 B&W photocopy of a portrait. The face in the picture must be a minimum of 1/2 the size of the page.
