Marigold Flower used to dye Fibre

Natural Dye Courses

In each natural dye course, every participant will be dyeing 50g of wool. The wool will be pre-mordanted for the class, but in each class you will learn the steps to mordant fibers on your own. (A mordant is a substance used to set dyes on fabrics).  All natural dye courses will be three hours. You will need rubber gloves for all courses, otherwise all materials are included in the cost of the course.

Natural Dye: Marigold
When: Monday, June 7th
Time: 6 – 9pm
Cost: $45 – $60  (+ gst) sliding scale
Instructor:  Caitlin ffrench

We will be using marigold flowers to dye wool a rich yellow shade. Marigolds can be easily grown in this area of British Columbia, and are a highly pigmented dye. They are a dye that does not require a mordant, but we will be using it with mordanted wool. We will be dyeing a rich yellow colour. Minimum 5 and maximum 8 participants.

Materials Needed: 50 – 100g of 100% wool can be purchased at Baaad Anna’s.

Natural Dye: Madder
When: Tuesday, June 8th
Time: 6 – 9pm
Cost: $45 – $60  (+ gst) sliding scale
Instructor:  Caitlin ffrench

Madder is the ground up roots from the Rubia Tinctorum plant. Madder can yeild colours that range greatly. They include orange, pink red, and deep violet. (Depending on how the wool is mordanted).  We will be dyeing a rich turkey red. Minimum 5 and maximum 8 participants.

Materials Needed: 50 – 100g of 100% wool can be purchased at Baaad Anna’s.

Natural Dye Garden
When: Sunday June 13th
Time: 1-3 pm
Cost: $25 – $35  (+ gst) sliding scale
Instructor:  Caitlin ffrench

In this course, you will be learning which plants to put in your garden next year that will yield you dye stuff. You will also learn what vegetable and fruits you can use from the supermarket. There will be lists of resources for sourcing out seeds and plants, as well as a hand illustrated booklet with all of the information learned in the course. You will also learn how to properly use mordants. (A mordant is a substance used to set dyes on fabrics). Minimum 5 and maximum 8 participants.

Fibre dyed with Cochineal

Natural Dye: Cochineal
When: Monday, June 14th
Time: 6 – 9pm
Cost: $45 – $60  (+ gst) sliding scale
Instructor:  Caitlin ffrench

Cochineal dye was used by the Aztec and Mayan peoples of Central and North America. A deep crimson dye is extracted from the female cochineal insects. Cochineal is used to produce scarlet, orange, and other red tints. Cochineal is one of the few water-soluble colorants that resist degradation with time. It is one of the most light- and heat-stable and oxidation-resistant of all the natural colorants and is even more stable than many synthetic food colours. We will be dyeing a red/magenta colour. Minimum 5 and maximum 8 participants.

Natural Dye: Clutch
When: Tuesday, June 15th
Time: 6 – 9pm
Cost: $45 – $60  (+ gst) sliding scale
Instructor:  Caitlin ffrench

This is an extract prepared from wood of the tree Acacia Catechu. It yields a varied range of rich browns depending on the mordant.  We will be dyeing a warm brown colour. Minimum 5 and maximum 8 participants.

Wool Dyed with Logwood

Natural Dye: Logwood
When: Monday,  June 21st
Time: 6 – 9pm
Cost: $55 – $70  (+ gst) sliding scale
Instructor:  Caitlin ffrench

Logwood trees grow in Central and South America. The dyestuff comes from the heartwood of the tree. Logwood is interesting, because when you are preparing the dyebath the dull brown wood bleeds out a rich magenta colour. Logwood dyes greys and purples. We will be dyeing a deep purple. Minimum 5 and maximum 8 participants.

Natural Dye: Tea
When: Tuesday,  June 22nd
Time: 6 – 9pm
Cost: $45 – $60  (+ gst) sliding scale
Instructor: Caitlin ffrench

Using black tea, we will be dyeing wool. Tea is a great dye because it is so readily available. It yields a brown/orange colour.  We will be dyeing a brown/orange colour. Minimum 5 and maximum 8 participants.
