SWEATERS WITHOUT A PATTERN

Have you ever seen a yarn you fell in love with, only to be unable to find just the right pattern for it? Or have you carefully and correctly knitted a pattern only to find that it doesn’t quite fit
your body like it did the pattern model’s?

Only recently have knitters been given painstakingly detailed, step-by-step instructions to work with. In the past, knitters learned basic shapes, formulas, and techniques rather than patterns, and they
made sweaters to fit the wool and the person. In this class, you will be guided through designing and knitting your own sweater to fit. Come with yarn you love and prepare to emancipate yourself from pattern
books!

Prerequisites: must know how to knit, purl, cast on, cast off, increase, and decrease.

Dates: Sunday’s Oct 23, 30, Nov 6, 27, Dec 11, 18 (12 hours instruction)
Time: 12 – 2pm
Cost:  $110  – $125 (+hst) sliding scale  materials NOT included
Instructor: Kirsten Zerbini
Materials needed: a materials sheet will be printed for or emailed to you when you register for the class. Please also bring the following: a measuring tape, a pad of paper, a calculator, a darning needle, a crochet hook, stitch markers, and a copy of Knitting In the Old Way by Priscilla Gibson-Roberts OR Knitting Without Tears by Elizabeth Zimmerman. Both are excellent books that will guide you through the process, although the Gibson-Roberts book contains more comprehensive technical information.

FREE-FORM KNITTING

Free form sample

Freeform knitting and crochet is a fun way for knitters to explore the artistic possibilities of knitting to make blankets, wall hangings, handbags, or pillow covers that resemble paintings done in yarn. Google artists like Prudence Mapstone or Jenny Dowd to see examples of the technique.

You should have a grasp of basic knitting and/or crochet techniques, but you can freeform with a range of skills from the rudimentary to the advanced. In class, we’ll cover shaping techniques, joins, seaming, picking up stitches neatly, judging the right needle or hook size for a particular yarn, and modular knitting.

Date: Sunday’s Oct 2, 9
Time: 12 – 2pm
Cost: $50 (+hst)
Instructor: Kirsten Zerbini
Materials needed:
1. Any yarn you like, and bring your stash! Freeforming is the perfect use for tiny bits of interesting yarn. Bring yarn to swap – the more variety, the better.
2. A variety of needles and/or hooks in different sizes, (both straight and circular needles will be of use.
