Learn to Spin with a Drop Spindle Workshop

Want to learn to spin your own yarn? This 2-hour workshop will teach the basics of how to make your yarn with a drop spindle. Participants will be spinning a single ply yarn and will receive a basic intro to the process of spinning your own yarn from beginning to end. Participants will also learn various drafting techniques.

Materials (INCLUDED): Participants will receive an Ashford Student Top Spindle and 50 grams of Corriedale wool in the colour of their choice.

INSTRUCTOR: Ruth Griffiths

Ruth started rigid heddle weaving in the mid-eighties, and then moved on to a floor loom. She recently rediscovered it with added enthusiasm due to the direct warping method. She also spins, knits, dyes, weaves on both rigid heddle and floor looms, and plays with cats.

Intro to Wheel Spinning Class

Wheel spinning opens a new world on your spinning journey. You’ll get acquainted with the Ashford Kiwi Wheel and start creating your own custom yarn.

We’ll cover what fibres work best for beginners and how to prepare them for spinning. You’ll learn several spinning and plying techniques –  as well as when and why to use them, tips for spinning consistent yarn, and finishing methods to make sure your yarn is as long-lasting as it is unique

Participants will learn how to set up and use the equipment. All materials plus the 14 day rental of the Ashford Kiwi Wheel included.

Minimum 2 and maximum 4 participants.

Materials (INCLUDED): Participants will receive a three week rental of an Ashford Two Treadle Kiwi Spinning Wheel and 100 grams of Corriedale wool in two colours of your choice.

FEB DATES: Sundays February 18 and 25th from 9:30 am – 12:30 pm ~or~ 

APR DATES: Sundays April 21 and 28th from 9:30 am – 12:30 pm ~or~ 

MAY DATES: Sundays May 19th and 26th  from 9:30 am – 12:30 pm.

COST: $165(+tax)  $80 deposit and Rental Agreement with a credit card required for the Knitters Loom due at the time of the first class.

INSTRUCTOR: Dana Dekoven

Dana has been a passionate spinner, dyer, knitter, and all-round fibre enthusiast for most of her life. She brings a welcoming approach and more than two decades’ experience teaching engagingly hands-on workshops and courses. When not experimenting with fibres, yarn and dyes, she teaches knitting to seniors.
