Winter 2010 One-Day Workshop Schedule

Fibre Graffiti Workshop
When: Tuesday, January 26th, 2010
Time: 6 – 8pm
Cost: $10
Instructor: Janna Vallee and Ana Sousa

This class is all about stepping out of your creative comfort zone and having a whole lot of fun.

Learn the art of fibre graffiti in a variety of techniques from knitting and crochet to felting and weaving while using many different mediums from yarn to pipe cleaners, embroidery thread and roving.  Bring your unfinished knitted and crocheted projects or old store-bought sweaters to embellish and display for the public to see as graffiti art.   The first half of the class will be for exploring techniques, the second half will be a little field trip to graffiti Baaad Anna’s neighbourhood.

Participants should be seasoned in one or more of the techniques mentioned above.  This class is being taught by textile art students Janna Vallee and Ana Sousa.  Come out and play with us.

Materials needed: Knitting needles or Crochet Hooks, Stash yarn, and any other stashed fiber. The bellow items will be available for use: Yarn from Janna’s stash, Embroidery thread, Pipe cleaners, roving, felting needles

Mini Sock Workshop – Intermediate
When: Saturday, February 6th, 2010
Time: 12 – 4:00pm
Cost: $35 (+gst)
Instructor: Hilary Jones

The class will cover knitting in the round with dpn, turning a heel, picking up and knitting a gusset and decreasing a toe and grafting a toe. Participants will learn all the necessary skills to make a pair of full sized socks. Minimum 5 and Maximum 8 participants

Materials needed: 4mm dpn, dk weight yarn (recommended Mirsol hacho). Materials can be purchased at Baaad Anna’s.

Introduction to Magic Loop – Intermediate
When: Sunday, February 7th, 2010
Time: 1 – 4:00pm
Cost: $25 (+gst)

Learn to knit small diameter projects in the round using just one circular needle. This workshop covers the basics of magic loop knitting including needle selection, casting on, and tips for converting from projects written for dpns. The project will be a reusable coffee cup cozy/sleeve. Feel free to bring in a project you’d like to do using magic loop and get help at the end of the workshop. Participants need to know how to cast on, knit, and purl to take this workshop. Minimum 5 and Maximum 8 participants

Materials needed: Size 7, 32” or 40” circular needle. Suggested brands include Addi turbos, HiyaHiyas, or Knitpicks. 50g light colored, worsted weight wool yarn. 1 locking stitch marker or safety pin to fit your needle.Materials can be purchased at Baaad Anna’s.

Beyond the Basics – Beginner/Intermediate
When: Saturday February 20th, 2010
Time: 12 – 3pm
Cost: $30 (+gst)

For those who can knit and purl and want to take their knitting to the next level. Learn techniques like increasing, decreasing, cables, following patterns and abbreviations. You’ll move from a beginner knitter to intermediate in this one day workshop. Minimum 5 and maximum 8 participants.

Materials needed: 1 ball of chunky weight yarn and 5mm double pointed needle. Supplies can be purchased at Baaad Anna’s.

Free Form Knitting Workshop – Intermediate
When: Saturday, March 6th, 2010
Time: 10am – 12pm
Cost: $25
Instructor: Kirstin Zerbini

Freeform knitting is a fun way for knitters to explore the artistic possibilities of knitting to make blankets, wall hangings, handbags, tea cozies, or pillow covers that resemble paintings done in yarn. It’s yarn anarchy! Come and find out how to bring out the best in a yarn, play with texture, play with colour. There is no wrong answer in freeform knitting; all the extremes are welcome, and the middle-of-the-road is a nice place to play, too.

This class is freeform too. If you’re brand new to the art of freeform knitting, I’ll get you started. If you’ve mastered the basics, I’ll show you something new. Techniques you can make use of include perpendicular joins, picking up stitches, short rows, modular knitting, cables, lacework, duplicate stitch, ruffles, flowers, i-cord embellishments. Minimum 5 and Maximum 8 participants.

Materials needed: Any yarn you like, and bring your stash! This type of knitting is the perfect use for tiny bits of interesting yarn. Bring yarn to swap.A variety of needles in different sizes, both straights and circulars. Optional: darning needles, crochet hooks, and a stitch dictionary. Supplies can be purchased at Baaad Anna’s.

Felted Foods Workshop
When: Saturday, March 20th, 2010
Time: 10am – 12pm
Cost: $28

Play food is a great thing to have in the playroom, but why get the plastic stuff? Felted wool can be sculpted to any shape you like, and you’ll get toys that are warm to the touch, durable, non-toxic, and beautiful. In this 2-hour workshop, you’ll learn the basics of needle felting and make a few pieces of play food to take home. This workshop is intended for adults, but children from 8-12 are welcome if accompanied by an adult who is also taking the class (those 13 and up do not need to be accompanied). Minimum 5 and maximum 8 participants

Materials needed: Rubber Gloves, Needle Felting tool and needles, needle felting mat. Supplies available for purchase at Baaad Anna’s.
