Hot Right Now

Ever wanted to design and publish your own shawl on Learn
the ropes of lace shawl design with Caitlin ffrench and Sylvia
McFadden. We will cover a whole range of lace shawl design topics in
this four class course. From an idea to a finished object! We will
talk about charts, shawl shaping, charting software, how to input lace
into a shawl shape, designing, swatching, knitting, blocking and at
the end there will be a photography class on how to take trendy
beautiful images of your finished shawl. Come join us!

Tuesdays, June 25 – Planning Your Design
July 2 – Tools & Techniques for Design
July 9 – Troubleshoot your Design
July 16 – Photographing your Design, self-publishing and how to make
it “hot right now”

Time: 6 – 8pm Cost: $75 – $95 (sliding scale +hst)
(the photography course can be taken separate – $30)

Prerequisites: Participants must be at an intermediate or higher level
of knitting. Participants must be able to finish a shawl within 2
weeks of the course. It will be helpful if participants have a good
understanding of basic/common lace charts/instructions.

Materials Needed: Needle size & yarn choice will be discussed within
the class, but a minimum of 1 – 32” needle and 1-2 balls of yarn will
be needed. A good dictionary of stitches and/or lace patterns is
useful but NOT necessary, there will be books accessible for use
during the class.


Sheep to Shawl

Turn this into a shawl!

This course will take you through all the steps from sheep & raw fibre all the way to finished yarn and ready for you to knit with. After this course, who knows – backyard sheep anyone?

June 30Solar Dyeing Learn how to naturally dye your yarn and fibre using the sun!

July 7 – Cleaning & Carding In this one hour workshop you will learn how to set up, use and properly clean a drum carder. You will learn how to card a washed but otherwise unprocessed fleece and also how to blend colours with our drum carders.

July 14 Drop Spindle This workshop will teach the basics of how to make your own yarn with a drop spindle. Participants will be spinning a single ply yarn and will receive a basic intro to the process of spinning your own yarn from beginning to end.

July 21 – Getting Started on a wheel Always wanted to try spinning with a wheel but not sure you could get started on your own? This workshop will give you all the information you’ll need to start spinning with a wheel. How to set it up (making sure everything’s in the right place!), advice on treadling with a single or double treadle wheel, different drafting techniques, basic plying and basic maintenance. We will be practicing with both of the store wheels, the Ashford Kiwi and Ashford Traditional. If you already have a wheel that you’d like specific help with feel free to bring it.

July 28 – Felting In this workshop you will learn how to design and create your own felt bowl or vessel using wet felting techniques. All supplies included, no experience necessary!

Time: 1 – 3pm Cost: $85 – $100 (sliding scale + hst)
Classes can be taken separately for $30/class

Materials : All materials are included for these classes, including
fibre and any dyes used. Drop spindles will be available for use
during the class, you may want to purchase your own.

Our Fantastic Classes!

These short 1-hr sessions are meant to help improve your knitting, or add new skills to your knitting repertoire – just in time for fall knitting to start! Workshops can be taken individually or as a set.

July 13 – Fixing Common Mistakes
July 27 – Cables (learn how to knit cables)
August 3 – Continental Knitting (learn how to knit the continental style)
August 10 – Reading Charts (learn the basics of reading charts and start knitting lace)
August 24 – Finishing & Blocking (great finishing techniques & how to block your FO’s)

Time: 1 – 3pm Cost: $85 – $100 (sliding scale + hst)
Classes can be taken separately for $30/class

Prerequisites: Participants must be able to knit & purl.

Materials Needed: A list of swatches and sizes will be emailed to all
participants within 2 weeks of the class.
