Fibre Arts in the Classroom: ZOOM Edition!

Are you a teacher or play one on TV? Do you know teachers that may be interested in this, or have a child in a local school that may be interested in finding ways to bring fibre arts into their classroom in this crazy new world? (See the bottom for a cool incentive, if the love of fibre arts was not already enough!!).

Baaad Anna’s is committed to strengthening the fibre arts community, and we would be happy to lend our skills hand in hand with teachers on how to bring fibre arts workshops into your classrooms. We have adapted our adult classes to Zoom teaching seamlessly and our fibre arts instructors have received fantastic reviews. We have now adapted zoom teaching of fibre arts to the classroom as an opportunity work together with teachers to open up the possibilities offered in the world of fibre arts. In addition to a new tactical skill, fibre art classes encourage delayed gratification and the possibility of letting go of a need for perfection (fibre arts skills are directly correlated to the time invested!).

We offer a variety of levels of experience in different fibre arts, and pro-rate our costs to the school districts to make them as affordable as possible while fairly compensating our fibre artists for their skills. We would work directly with any teacher that feels their class would be ready to access this new technology to learn a traditional skill. We have worked with various school districts for their professional development activities, and below are some of the workshops we have and can offer. Please contact us at baaadannas@gmail.com for more information.

Learn to Needle Felt

This workshop will teach the basics of needle felting and will build a three-dimensional fibre art creation to take home. Our needle felting instructor has adapted needle felting techniques and projects for beginners from the age of kindergarten up to adult. We would provide all materials, a 15-minute private zoom lesson for the teacher and 1.5 hour in-class zoom call combining lecture and interactive learning.

No previous felting experience necessary. All materials such as Corriedale wool fibre, foam blocks and wire will be included.

Steps in completing a ladybug pin.

Cost: $100 + $6/participant for materials (includes fibre, and a 3 day rental of a classroom set of felting foam blocks).

If you would like to keep the classroom set of felting foam blocks for future projects or for your participants to keep, please budget an additional $5 for each participant.

Learn to Wet Felt

This workshop will teach the basics of the practical art of wet felting in which you will create a felted bar of soap. Why felt a bar of soap? Because it is a built-in washcloth, the wool is gently exfoliating, and felted soaps last longer and lather better than their ‘naked’ counterparts. Also, after the soap is used up you are left with a useful little scrubby. We would provide all materials, a 15-minute private zoom lesson for the teacher and 1 hour in-class zoom call combining lecture and interactive learning.

No previous felting experience necessary. All materials such as corriedale wool fibre, soap and bucket will be included. Just add warm water (and towels)!

Cost: $75 + $4.5/participant for materials.

Learn to Crochet

This workshop will teach the basic stitches for crochet including; chain, slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet & magic ring. The class project will be a reusable washcloth or face scrubby. We would provide all materials, a 30-minute private zoom lesson for the teacher and 2-hour in-class zoom call combining lecture and interactive learning.

No previous felting experience necessary. All materials including cotton yarn and crochet hook included.

Cost: $125 + $8/participant for materials.

Learn to Knit Club

We are developing a 4-part workshop that would cover the basics of knitting if there is a teacher that would like to try this with us. Over 5 weeks of 45-minute zoom calls we would cover the slip knot, knit-style cast on, the knit stitch, the purl stitch and cast off. We would need a teacher that is already proficient in knitting, and one who understands that not all students would be equally motivated to learn to knit, but would all be able to keep quietly busy while others are learning. We would provide all materials, a four 15-minute private zoom lessons/planning for the teacher and five 45-minute in-class zoom call combining lecture and interactive learning.

We have donation yarn that we would offer for this class, so the only materials included in the cost would be a class set of knitting needles.

Cost: Starting at $300 + $8/participant for materials.
