Teachers and Schools
We want to encourage the hands-on experience of fibre arts in all ages, so we are happy to provide local teachers and schools with a variety of resources to do so.
Not sure where to start? Read our Teaching Fibre Arts recommendations and considerations here.
Here are some of what we can offer:
- 10% discount on basic fibre arts materials for your classroom, specifically:
- Corriedale fibre, Galway 100% wool yarn, and basic knitting or felting needles, or crochet hooks are available to all teachers of fibre arts when buying quantities of 10 or more
- All teachers with a valid BCTF card can also receive 10% off when shopping for their classrooms
- Donations of yarn odds and ends (when available)
- A variety of levels of workshops in different fibre arts with pro-rate costs to school districts to make them as affordable as possible while fairly compensating our fibre artists for their skills.
- Now adapted to ZOOM. We have worked with various school districts for their professional development activities, and below are some of the workshops we have and can offer. Please contact us at baaadannas@gmail.com for more information.
Sheep to Shawl: How Wool Becomes Clothing
This workshop will demonstrate the various processes that are used for raw fibre to become clothing and wearable art through the carding, spinning and the dyeing process. We will bring in various equipment traditionally used in this processes and participants will have a chance to get hands on learning about wool, its properties and the various fibre arts could be brought into classrooms of children of various ages. Each participant will leave with a sample pack of raw wool, spun wool and finished yarn to continue the discussion in your classroom on where clothing is made.
Learn to Needle Felt
This workshop will teach the basics of needle felting and will build a three-dimensional fibre art creation to take home. Our needle felting instructor has adapted needle felting techniques and projects for beginners from the age of kindergarten up to adult. We would provide all materials, a 15-minute private zoom lesson for the teacher and 1.5 hour in-class zoom call combining lecture and interactive learning.
Cost: $100/workshop + $6/participant for materials (includes fibre, and rental of a classroom set of felting foam blocks, cookie cutters, and pin backing if required).
If you would like to keep the classroom set of felting foam blocks for future projects or for your participants to keep, please budget an additional $5 for each participant.
Learn to Wet Felt
This workshop will teach the basics of the practical art of wet felting in which you will create a felted bar of soap. Why felt a bar of soap? Because it is a built-in washcloth, the wool is gently exfoliating, and felted soaps last longer and lather better than their ‘naked’ counterparts. Also, after the soap is used up you are left with a useful little scrubby. We would provide all materials, a 15-minute private zoom lesson for the teacher and 1 hour in-class zoom call combining lecture and interactive learning.
No previous felting experience necessary, perfect for Grade 1 to adult. All materials such as corriedale wool fibre, soap and bucket will be included. Just add warm water (and towels)!
Cost: $100 + $4/participant for materials
Arm Knitting
This workshop is a minimal-supplies approach, only needing to supply the yarn. Great for Grade 1 and up.
Learn to Crochet
This workshop will teach the basic stitches for crochet including; chain, slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet & magic ring. The class project will be a reusable washcloth or face scrubby. We would provide all materials, a 30-minute private zoom lesson for the teacher and 2-hour in-class zoom call combining lecture and interactive learning.
No previous felting experience necessary. All materials including cotton yarn and crochet hook included.
Learn to Knit Club
We are developing a 4-part workshop that would cover the basics of knitting if there is a teacher that would like to try this with us. Over 5 weeks of 45-minute zoom calls we would cover the slip knot, knit-style cast on, the knit stitch, the purl stitch and cast off. We would need a teacher that is already proficient in knitting, and one who understands that not all students would be equally motivated to learn to knit, but would all be able to keep quietly busy while others are learning. We would provide all materials, a four 15-minute private zoom lessons/planning for the teacher and five 45-minute in-class zoom call combining lecture and interactive learning. Grade 3 to adult recommended.
We have donation yarn that we would offer for this class, so the only materials included in the cost would be a class set of knitting needles.
Cost: Starting at $300 + $8/participant for materials.
