Vegan Yarn is brought to you by Heidi Braacx who hand dyes yarn in her home studio right here in the Lower Mainland, in New Westminster. Her Pakucho cotton is a special yarn, in that the colourways are naturally pigmented and not dyed (which is why there’s some price variance between colorways). The cotton is grown in natural cream, beige, brown, avocado, and mauve shades without pesticides, herbicides, or other chemicals.

Pakucho is made from an ancient heritage variety of South American cotton and purchasing this yarn directly supports biodiversity and the amazing heritage of colourgrown cottons. We really appreciate how much Vegan Yarn focuses on sustainability, and fair trade and labour practices. The Pakucho yarn is EKO Certified Organic by USDA, adheres to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), SKAL & Certified Fair Trade by Control Union Fair Choice, and it has been made for Vegan Yarn by Peru Naturtex.

If all that wasn’t enough to convince you to plan your next project in this yarn then let me add this: it is machine washable and can be put in the dryer as long as you account for 10-15% shrinkage in length as you would with other cotton fabrics. The colour will also intensify with washing rather than dulling. Drop some food on your sweater or get it dirty while out on a hike? Pop it into the washing machine. It’s the ideal no muss, no fuss yarn that will let you wear your me mades worry free.

One of our staff members, Gabby, is currently working on a Sailing Sweater in Vegan Yarn Pakucho using the Rust colourway. It’s beautifully soft and gives lovely definition to lace and cable patterns. The breathable cotton is going to make it the perfect sweater for cool summer evenings. We can’t wait to see how the lace looks when it’s blocked, the stitch definition and texture of the Pakucho yarn will really pop!

Note: for this sweater Gabby went down two needle sizes to achieve the required gauge in the pattern. Don’t forget to gauge swatch when trying new yarns to make sure that your final work will match the patterns intended dimensions. Check out this great Tin Can Knits resource on gauge, you’ll never regret swatching!
