Uplift your knits from “home made” to “hand knit” by learning fine finishings and other techniques that rival commercially made garments. Skills needed: Knit, purl, basic increase and decrease.

Part I:  Fully Fashioned Shaping

Finishing techniques can make or break a hand-knit garment. Fully fashioned shaping lends an elegant and sophisticated air to hand-knits. We’ll examine the English tailored shoulder: what it is, how to make it and how to alter a pattern to feature it. We’ll also explore the whole concept of fully fashioned shaping
to help you make decisions on what increases and decreases to use when introducing shaping to your garments. The English tailored shoulder is featured in
the Seaswell cardigan from the book, Tempest. Holli uses this shoulder in many other patterns in other publications including Wake and Wickaninnish in Cascadia,
Weft from Twist Collective Fall 2014 and Classic Lace Cardigan from Vogue Knitting Spring 2013, as well as in soon to be published pattern.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Worsted weight yarn in a light to medium colour.  You can bring more than one colour if you want to make stripes or contrast edging and cuffs
  • 4mm (US 6) or 4.5mm (US 7) size needle
  • Cable needle
  • Basic knitters toolkit
  • Gauge swatch homework (give upon registration)

Materials can be purchased at Baaad Anna’s Yarn Store.

Skills Taught: Cabled double and triple decreases, mirrored increases and decreases, how to alter a standard bottom-up pattern (worked flat) with a set in sleeve to have an English tailored shoulder.

DATE: Saturday, Oct 13th from 10:00am – 1:00pm

COST: $55 for the one class OR $125 for the series

*****

Part II:  Short Rows

Learn a couple methods for working short rows and see how they compare before choosing your favourite method. Included will be the wrap and turn and Japanese short rows with variations on both. The Ebb & Flow blanket from the book, Tempest, is a wonderful beginner’s project for practicing short rows. Eventide also calls for short rows.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Worsted weight yarn in a light to medium colour.  You can bring more than one colour if you want to make stripes or contrast edging and cuffs
  • 4.5mm (US 7) size needles
  • Self-locking stitch markers

  • Homework (give upon registration)

Materials can be purchased at Baaad Anna’s Yarn Store.

Part III:  Picking Up Stitches

So, just where do you insert your needle when picking up and knitting on an edging? We’ll cover beautiful finishing techniques that include determining the right number of stitches to pick up to avoid a front band that curves because it’s too long or too short. By the end of the class you’ll be able to pick up and knit or purl along straight , diagonal, cast-on/bind-off edges, and selvage edges. We’ll also discuss buttonhole placement.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Two colours of Worsted weight yarn in a light to medium colour
  • 3.75mm and 4mm (US 5 and 6) knitting needles

MENDING WORKSHOP with Holli Yeoh

We spend too much time on our hand knits to throw them away when they get a hole. Join Holli Yeoh for a three-hour, hands-on repair class. You’ll learn Swiss darning, stocking darning and how to use a knitted patch to repair a hole. The techniques are transferable to commercially made garments, as well.
Holli will demonstrate how to use decorative embroidery as a repair strategy as well as needle felting to repair small holes.
