BEGINNER KNITTING with Rebecca Glazier – ONLINE via ZOOM

This is a beginner knitting class for anyone who has never picked up needles, or for someone who is looking for a beginner refresher. Participants will learn the basics including casting on, knitting, purling and casting off. The class project will be a choice between simple cowl or arm warmers.

The class runs over four weeks in a single month.  *Each session is one hour long with an additional half hour extension added if we have four or more registrants.

MATERIALS ARE INCLUDED AND INCLUDE FREE SHIPPING (current shipping turnaround min. one week; or call (604) 255 2577 for more immediate curbside pickup which can be arranged any day between 11am-6pm).

Socks for Beginners – Online via Zoom 

DATES: Thursdays May 26, June 2, 9 and 16th from 6:00-7:30 pm PT.

For the knitter who has been knitting for a while and feels like they’ve found their footing. Let’s put a sock on it!

Over a few weeks you will knit a top-down boot sock (DK-weight) or an around-home sock (Worsted-weight). You can also knit a tiny sock if you don’t have time for homework. If you’re a knitting socks for someone else, bring in their measurements: foot circumference around the ball of the foot and length.

Techniques To Be Learned:

  • Holli’s favourite stretchy cast on
  • Circular knitting with double-pointed needles (DPNs), or two circular needles or one long circular needle for Magic Loop (your choice)
  • Avoiding ladders and loose stitches
  • Heel construction including heel flap, heel turn and picking up stitches around the heel
  • Grafting (Kitchener stitch)
  • Getting the right fit

Materials Needed:

  • 3.25mm needles for a DK weight sock OR 3.75mm needles for a Worsted weight sock; choose either DPNs, two 24″ circular needles for two circulars method, or one 32″ or longer circular needle for the Magic Loop method
  • 375yd/345m of DK weight such as Estelle DK OR 350yd/320m of Worsted weight yarn such as Uptown Worsted. For online classes recommend choosing a lighter colour or yarn.
  • Measuring tape
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle

Students leave her workshops with an arsenal of valuable techniques, deep understanding of the choices to be made in knitting, and new confidence.

Beginner Sweater Class – Online via Zoom

DATES: Wednesdays June 1, 8, 15 and 22nd from 6:00-7:30 pm PT.

THIS IS AN ONLINE CLASS via ZOOM, so you will also need to have a decent internet connection and download the free ZOOM app. Instructions will be emailed before 1st class.

Using a baby cardigan pattern that Holli Yeoh has designed specifically for this class, you’ll learn the basics on sweater construction, shaping, swatching, pattern reading and lots of other helpful tips. Come to class with your first gauge swatch already knit and you’ll be well on your way to completing your first sweater. By the end of the class you’ll have the skills to tackle a full-sized sweater for yourself!

Expect to work on the project at home between classes so you’ll be ready to learn the next step in the sweater at the next class.

Suitable for Advanced Beginners and Beyond.

Summer Snacks! Provisional Cast on and Kitchener Stitch – Online via Zoom

DATE: Tuesday June 7th from 6:00-8:00 pm PT.

THIS IS AN ONLINE CLASS via ZOOM, so you will also need to have a decent internet connection and download the free ZOOM app. Instructions will be emailed before 1st class.

The Provisional cast on and Kitchener Stitch almost always go hand in hand and in this fun Summer Snack class you will learn both these techniques. Find out how to create live stitches with the Provisional (crochet) cast on and then how to unravel and get the stitches back onto your needle confidently. Next you will learn the magic of the Kitchener stitch to create a seamless row of knitting with yarn and a darning needle.

Skills Required: Knit and purl.

Materials Needed:

  • 20g / 43 yards (40 m) each of DK or Worsted weight yarn in TWO colours.  Smooth yarn is preferred such for example Estelle SW Merino DK or Sugarbush Bold.  This is a great for stash busting.
  • Needles in size suitable for yarn weight. You will require three needles in same size.
  • Crochet hook in similar size to needles
  • Darning needle

Butterfly|Papillon Shawl Workshop – Online via Zoom

Long, transitional colour changes, symmetrical design, short rows and striping are just some of the techniques used to create the beautiful Butterfly|Papillon Shawl by Marin Melchior. Recently our Project of the Month which you can read about here.

In this 3 hour workshop and using two small amounts of yarn (44y) of contrasting colours you will learn all the techniques required to make this stunning shawl and how to navigate the pattern afterwards independently.

Skills Needed: Knit and purl, cast on and bind off.

Intro To Double Knitting Workshop – Online via Zoom

DATE: Sunday June 12th from 1:00-4:00pm PT.

THIS IS AN ONLINE CLASS via ZOOM, so you will also need to have a decent internet connection and download the free ZOOM app. Instructions will be emailed before 1st class.

Double knitting is so much fun! And maybe not as spicy as you think! In this class you’ll learn the modern style of double knitting – working with two colours across the row at the same time and mirror reversed patterns. Once you have this skill you’ll be able to go on to design your own double knit patterns!

Skills Required: Knit, purl, cast on and bind off. Experience in two handed colourwork knitting is helpful – if you haven’t tried this yet Rebecca suggests you practice knitting and purling with yarn coming from your non-dominant hand before the class.

Materials Needed:

Summer Snacks! Mattress Seam Online via Zoom

DATE: Tuesday June 14th from 6:00-8:00pm PT

Join us for this Summer Snack session and learn to master the Mattress Stitch Seam. You will learn how to seam horizontally and vertically on both stockinette and garter fabrics.

Skills required: Cast on, bind off, knit and purl.

Materials Needed:

  • Two colours of DK or Worsted weight yarn, preferably something smooth. 20g/45 yards (40m) of each is plenty. We recommend solid colours and with a contrast.
  • Needles: size recommended on ball band
  • Homework – there is homework to be completed before the class, will be sent upon registration.

Fair Isle and Steeking – Online Via Zoom

DATES: Sunday June 19  and 26th from 10:30am to 12:30pm PT.

Is steeking on your “learn to do wish list” but feeling a little daunted by this technique, you are not alone! Taking a pair of scissors to your knitting can feel scary, especially if it is on a whole sweater!
Fear not, over the two sessions you will be guided through two handed Fair Isle, how to catch your weaves confidently and not tangle your yarn!  In the second session you will cover picking up stitches, button bands and STEEK!
The Steek This Coffee Cozy by Rachel Molenaar is a perfect project to learn these new skills as well as make a great gift.

Skills Required: Knit, purl, cast on and bind off.

Have you been thinking of trying brioche, but not ready to sign up for a full project class? Then this quick Summer Snack session is for you! In this class we will demystify the “sl1yo” technique and you will learn both one and two colour brioche knitting!

Skills required: Cast on, bind off, knit and purl.

Materials Needed:

  • Two colours of DK or Worsted weight yarn, preferably something smooth. 20g/45 yards (40m) of each is plenty. We recommend solid colours and high contrast.
  • Needles: One size smaller than recommended on ball band – either DPN’s or circular needles
  • Homework – a very small amount of homework to be completed before the class, will be sent upon registration.
