Each kid knits what they want based on interest and skill level while being guided in a fun and engaging group of knitters and friends. All levels welcome.

THRUMMED MITTENS

These Mitts have been around a couple of hundred years in North Newfoundland and Labrador. Quite possibly the warmest and coziest mittens you can make! This workshop is for knitters who are comfortable with cast on, knit, purl and knitting in the round. The workshop will show how to make thrums and insert them into your work.

Materials needed: 100g Worsted yarn, 50g Corriedale, 3.75mm & 4.5mm Needles (or as required for gauge); Can be purchased at Baaad Anna’s Yarn Store.

Homework: We will be using TinCanKnits’ world’s simplest mittens pattern (free on Ravelry http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-worlds-simplest-mittens). Please work the pattern from cast on and stop at the thumb gusset set up round, before the start of class. Note: Thrums take up a lot of space in your mitten! You will probably want to make the mitten one size larger than you usually wear and adjust the cuff length accordingly. The sample in the store is an adult medium with a 3 inch cuff – please feel free to come and try it on to see if it fits!

DATE: Sunday, Feb 18th from 11:00am-1:00pm

COST: $35 + tax

Minimum 3 and max 8 participants

INSTRUCTOR: Sarah Louttit

 ENTRELAC MITTENS (INTRO TO ENTRELAC)

Learn to knit the entrelac mittens pattern from the book, Knit Noro Accessories. The pattern is published in only one size, but in this class students will learn how to size the mitten up and down and will receive full instructions for five sizes.
This is large-scale entrelac with a total of only eight full diamonds in the mitt. Discover how the unique thumb extends from the centre of one of the diamonds. The class project will be to knit a child-sized mitten with some advance homework so we can get started right away with the intricacies of entrelac.

Materials needed: Bring:

  • One (at least) 50g ball of worsted weight yarn in a light to medium colour (Baaad Anna’s Yarn Store has Noro Hanabatake on-hand for $12.95/100g which would mimic the colour changes of the sample mitten nicely)
  • 4 mm (US 6) circular needle (32” (80 cm) long)
  • 3.5 mm (US4) and 4 mm (US 6) dpns
  • locking stitch markers
  • basic knitter’s toolkit
