Baaad Anna’s offers several classes with a sliding scale fee, which are affordable and respect our instructors’ work. When you register, please pay according to your income. Thank you.

GNO FUN LIKE GNOME FUN

Knit a little gnome in a three hour workshop and learn all sorts of tricks including 2-colour i-cord, bobble noses, stuffing toys, and more.
REQUIRED SKILLS: Students should be familiar with knitting in the round. Instructions will be given for knitting with DPNs but students who are familiar with magic loop or knitting on 2 circular needles can adapt the pattern to knit as they prefer.

MATERIALS NEEDED: 

  • US 5 / 3.75 mm DPNs (double pointed needles), or size needed to make a firm fabric that stuffing won’t show through – I suggest 2 sizes smaller than you would use for a worsted weight sweater.
  • Darning needle 
  • Removable stitch marker
  • Gnome kits can be purchased for $15 or please bring the following:
  •  
      • Colour 1 (Hat): 10 yd. / 9 m; approximately 5 g in worsted weight yarn
      • Colour 2 (Body): 12 yd. /11 m ; approximately 5 g in worsted weight yarn
      • Colour 3 (Beard/nose/hands): 7 yd. / 6 m; approximately 4 g in worsted weight yarn
      • approx. 1/8 C poly pellets/aquarium gravel/dried beans
      • fist-sized amount of roving/polyfill stuffing

CHOOSING COLOURS

Course description: Learn how to choose yarns so that you love the finished object – from understanding the mood and look you crave to experimenting with colours so that you can mix and match with confidence for single-colour and multi-colour projects. Students will leave with an arsenal of techniques to test colour combinations before they even start a swatch. For knitters and crocheters.
REQUIRED SKILLS: None! Come in fresh and bushy tailed!

MATERIALS NEEDED: 

  • Cell phone/digital camera (something with a black and white filter)
  • 5-10 different colours of yarn, any weight, about 5g or a pingpong ball-sized amount. Note: You will be placing these in a communal pile for all students to use during the colour play portion of our class. You can retrieve the yarns afterwards if you wish. 

DATE: Monday October 7th, from 6:00-8:00pm

DAYTIME REFRESHER: LEARN DPNs (Double Pointed Needles)

Want to know how to knit in the round with DPNs? It won’t always feel like wrestling a hedgehog!  We will work on a little coffee sleeve project to learn to feel comfortable using DPNs. An excellent first class if you want to take the evening gnome class with Sarah.
REQUIRED SKILLS: Comfortable with knitting and purling.

MATERIALS NEEDED: 

  • US 5/ 3.75 mm DPNs
  • 15g worsted weight yarn
  • Darning needle

BEGINNER KNITTING

This is a beginner knitting class for anyone who has never picked up needles, or for someone who is looking for a beginner refresher. Participants will learn the basics including casting on, knitting, purling and casting off. The class project will be a choice between simple  hat, scarf, or arm warmers.

Minimum 3 participants and max 8

The class includes 6 hours of instruction over 3 or 4 weeks in a single month.

MATERIALS NEEDED:  One pair of 6mm needles and 100g of a chunky weight yarn. Materials can be purchased at Baaad Anna’s Yarn Store.

SEPTEMBER DATES: Tuesdays September 10, 17, 24 & October 1, from 6-7:30 pm

OCTOBER DATES: Thursdays, October 10, 17, 24, & 31, from 6-7:30 pm

NOVEMBER DATES: Tuesdays November 5, 12, 19, 26, from 6-7:30 pm

BEGINNER SOCKS – SHORT ROWS

Knit socks that fit surprisingly like store-bought. In this class, you will practice with a sample or slipper sock. You may also challenge yourself with another project chosen during the first class.

TECHNIQUES LEARNED:

• Judy’s Magic (Provisional) Cast On,
• Circular knitting with Magic Loop (other options introduced during week 1),
• Avoiding ladders and loose stitches,
• Fish Lips Kiss (Short Row) Heel,
• Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

• Uptown Worsted yarn, in a light colour.
• Circular knitting needles, 4mm/US 6 diameter, 100cm/40” length.
• Tool kit with darning needle, stitch markers, and row counter.

KNITTING REFRESHER

This refresher prepares you to successfully knit the Building Blocks blanket, or can be a taken on its own to refresh skills you’ve forgotten and make you confident to knit your next project! If you are taking the Building Blocks Classes (below), and skip the introductory workshop, complete squares one and two before the first class to demonstrate your readiness to continue. Topics covered:

✩ Long tail cast on,
✩ Knit, purl, and cast off stitches in pattern,
✩ Written and charted instructions,
✩ Best practices for successful squares, and
✩ Start your first two squares.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

• Worsted weight yarn (we recommend Sugar Bush Bold)
• 5mm knitting needles (we recommend 60cm/24″ circular needles)

**NEW** BUILDING BLOCKS beyond the basics WORKSHOP SERIES

Have you completed a beginner knitting class and enjoy participating in our learning community? Have you been knitting for a while and want to expand your skills? This class is for you. Using the Building Blocks book by Michelle Hunter, you will practice beginner-to-intermediate knitting techniques on twelve unique squares, which can be combined into a lap blanket.

We suggest you take the Knitting Refresher Workshop before enrolling in Set A or B. You may enroll for the beginning of set A or set B after completing the Knitting Refresher.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

• Worsted weight yarn (we recommend Sugar Bush Bold)
• 5mm knitting needles (we recommend 60cm/24″ circular needles)
• Building Blocks by Michelle Hunter (available for 50% off regular price with registration at Baaad Anna’s Yarn Store)

Set A Class Description
During set A—offered September, November, February, and April—you will learn how to knit one or two squares every week.

✩ Week one: Yarn Over and Bobbles (square 3)

✩ Week three: Left Twist, SSK (squares 9 & 10)

Set B Class Description
You may enroll for the beginning of set A or set B. During set B—offered October, January, March, and May—you will learn how to knit one or two squares every week.

✩ Week four: Simple Decreases (square 4)

✩ Week five: Right Twist, Mock Cables (squares 6 & 7)

✩ Week six: Make One, Advanced Decreases (squares 11 & 12)

During each class, practice your new stitches on a swatch before you continue on your next square. We suggest you begin a swatch plus the bottom border for each square covered in that class. You might decide to bring as many as three separate knit pieces, with three balls of yarn, if we are working two squares in a class. Otherwise, you could practice and unravel with a single ball of yarn. See below for a hint about holding stitches.

Additional Classes
We include two more classes in the Building Blocks course. You may register in advance or drop in—we hold a 2 open drop-in seats for additional participants.

Put it Together: learn to join the squares you have completed, using Mattress stitch (vertical seams), Overcast stitch (horizontal seams), and Slip stitch (crocheted seams).

BEGINNER SWEATER

Using a baby cardigan pattern that Holli Yeo has designed specifically for this class, you’ll learn the basics on sweater construction, shaping, swatching and lots of other helpful tips. Come to class with your first gauge swatch already knit and you’ll be well on your way to completing your first sweater. By the end of the class you’ll have the skills to tackle a full-sized sweater for yourself!

Suitable for advanced beginners and beyond.

Fine Finishing Technique Series with Holli Yeoh

Uplift your knits from “homemade” to “hand knit” by learning fine finishing techniques that rival commercially made garments. In this series of 3 skill-building workshops, we’ll work on cast ons, seams, full-fashioned increases and decreases, grafting, weaving in ends, and more. You will feel a sense of pride and confidence in your finished projects!

Minimum 4 participants and maximum 8

Part I: Fine Finishings – Beginnings

In the first class, we’ll work on cast-ons, selvages, fully fashioned increases and decreases, and bind offs.

  • Worsted weight yarn in a light to medium colour
  • 4.5 mm (US 7) knitting needles

Part II: Fine Finishings – Endings

After all the pieces of your project are completed, you’ll want to prepare them for assembly and wearing. In the second class in the series, we’ll cover blocking, ends, applied edgings and if time permits, buttonholes.

Materials needed:

  • Worsted weight yarn in a light to medium colour
  • 4 mm (US 6) knitting needles
  • Homework swatch

DATE: Saturday, November 23, 1:30-4:30pm

Part III: Fine Finishings – Seaming

Make sure to give your knitting the attention it deserves when seaming your garments. You’ll have a chance to try your hand at mattress stitch on both stockinette stitch and garter stitch as well as false grafting. We’ll discuss the merits of reinforced seams and cover other seaming techniques as time permits.

Materials needed:

  • Two colours of Worsted weight yarn in a light to medium colour
  • Three 4.5 mm knitting needles
  • Darning Needle
  • Homework swatches
