Ready to knit your first pair of adult socks? Sock knitting utilizes a few different and unique steps that once learned, make a very satisfying & portable project.

In this class, we will cover each step of knitting a top down sock that is custom fit to your foot size. Students will learn: how to pick up stitches, turn a heel, shape for the instep, size the foot and graft a toe.

We will be using the Rye Sock Pattern from Tin Can Knits which can be knit in either: Worsted or DK weight yarn for this class depending on your comfort & experience.

We have been given permission to use this free pattern for this class by the designer. Please visit their website and check out their other designs!

Prerequisites: Experienced Beginner to Intermediate knitting skills required; students should be comfortable with magic loop or knitting on double pointed needles before taking this class.

Materials Needed:

You can knit your socks in either Worsted or DK. You will also need two sets of needles: smaller needles for the cuff ribbing and larger needles for the rest. For socks you can use either a tiny circular needle, double pointed needles (DPNs) or a long circular and the magic loop method. Lighter colours are recommended for this class in order to see stitches clearly.

  • Worsted Weight yarn such as Cascade Anthem or Cascade 220 (for thicker weight socks that knit up quicker on regular needles, best option for first time sock knitters)

         Adult S, M, L (220, 280, 340) yards Worsted / Aran weight yarn

US #3 / 3.25mm dpns (or circular for magic loop) and

US #5 / 3.75mm dpns (or circular for magic loop)

  • DK Weight such as Bramble Ridge DK or Estelle Double Knit (for medium weight socks & needles that aren’t quite so tiny, for knitters afraid of fine sock yarn & tiny needles)

         Adult S, M, L (260, 320, 420) yards DK weight yarn

US #2 / 2.75mm DPNs (or circular for magic loop) and

US #3 / 3.25mm DPNs (or circular for magic loop)
