Project of the Month and New Kits: Antlers Beach Throw

For our October’s Project of the Month we paired up two of Baaad Anna’s favourite Canadian companies, Estelle Yarns and Knox Mountain Knit Co to make the perfect cozy blanket/shawl for our autumn nights, the Antlers Beach Throw.

Based in Kelowna, Sasha MacDonnel and Willow Lot of Knox Mountain Knit Co design patterns inspired by BC’s Okanagan Valley.

“Running along the edge of Okanagan Lake at the south end of Peachland, lies Antlers Beach, a natural stretch of shoreline that boasts stunning views of the surrounding valley. This long, pebbled beach is a popular destination for swimming, picnicking, kayaking, or on the perfect stormy winter’s day, lake surfing.”

For the yarn we chose the lovingly affordable wool blend, the Estelle Bulky from the Canadian family-owned company Estelle established by Iris and Philip Peacock in 1976. This option keeps the garment easily washable, soft and priced to be inclusive to shoppers on a budget.

We fell in love with Knox Mountain’s gorgeous sample and for our sample chose the similar warm tones of Gold for our cozy project. The pattern calls for 1075 – 1200 yards (983 – 1097 m) total and we used four skeins of Gold for main colour, two skeins of Ecru for CC1 and one skein of Charcoal Heather for CC2.

Even better, we have kits with the pattern ready for you!

Antlers Beach Throw really is a very quick and relaxing knit. The simplicity of seed stitch with an eye-catching and rhythmic mosaic sections knit up in soft, bulky yarn makes this project truly perfect for these cooler evenings.

Our staff Janice took on our lovely store sample, and noted that she tends to have a looser gauge but found she was close to the project’s gauge and suggested needles of 9mm (US13.) The seed stitch offered a squishy structure to the project along with its gorgeous texture.

There are both charted and written instructions for the mosaic motif and as per the designer’s tips, keep those mosaic floats very loose where several stitches are slipped at a time.

Janice also found using the Knitter’s Pride Mindful Collections Swivel IC 120cm/47″ cord an absolute joy especially as the blanket grew and became heavier. She did not have to tighten the connection once and it always fell into place without any twists or resistance from the cable and the growing length of it sat perfectly in her lap keeping her warm as the temps dropped over the past few weeks.

To block this project Janice lay it out flat, pinned the mosaic lines and gave it a light steam on low heat to both even out the stitches and keep the mosaic edges nice and straight. In a few days it was fully dry.

  1. Do you have the kits for the Antler’s Beach afghan? I am interested in the gold version. I own the pattern and made one in the grey/blacks and it turned out lovely.
