Baaad24in24: Sisterhood of Travelling Skeins
I have a goal of FINISHING 24 projects in 2024; Join me? They can be big or small, new or old, and in any fibre craft; just get ‘er done.
Today’s topic: The sweater that a community built.
It seems like this year is going to be about problem-child projects. The sweater in today’s post started off well… a silk lace-pattern perfect as a cast-on for a late-summer summer project. This beautiful Iris pattern by one of my favorite summer-blend designers, Yumiko Alexander of DanDoh Designs looks intense, but once you get past the tight twisted-stitch ribbing there is a real rhythm in her design.
Knit in the gorgeous (and discontinued) Shibui Knits Staccato, a merino/silk blend, within a couple weeks I finished the front before wandering off to cast-on two or three distraction projects, until it surfaced again post-holiday knitting. The back zipped along quickly and being pretty proud of my speed and focus I celebrated by working on another two projects.
In February when I picked it up again I was please that I only had seaming and tiny cap-sleeves to finish in order to be able to claim another FO of the year. And this is where it get hairy. I packed it up in my backpack to take to work but before I left the house my teen decided she needed something from my bag while still on my back. I proceeded to the skytrain without realizing it be left unzippered, wide open, and as I sat down the contents of my backpack littered the train. I hurriedly picked up my mess and promptly apologized to everyone within sight, as only a Canadian can muster.
Arriving at work I prepped to seam only to find I no longer had the three extra balls that I had left for this project. Whomp, whomp.
I raged, and grieved, and then finally took to Ravelry to reach out to anyone else who posted a finished object made with the same yarn and colourway. Messaging each, within two weeks a total of 1.5 skeins of the same yarn was gifted to me by two separate knitters: one in New York and one in Quebec.
And now I can share this post with both of these yarn angels. This sweater means so much to me… What a world we live in!
Way to go Paula! When life gives you lemons you make lemonade!!!!!
