A few weeks ago, a customer came into the shop searching for the perfect cotton to bring a little crochet whale to life. As I helped her choose the right yarn, we couldn’t help but smile at how perfectly her project fit with the ocean theme that has been inspiring us lately especially with our whale window display catching the attention of everyone who walks by.

We were chatting about patterns and cotton options, and she mentioned she was a huge BTS fan. Their new song Swim had been inspiring a wave of ocean-themed handmade gifts at concerts, fans making and trading little crocheted whales, fish, and other “things that swim,” along with friendship bracelets. It honestly made so much sense. Crochet already lives in that space of care and connection, and fandom communities have taken it and turned it into something really joyful and communal. Imagine going to a concert and someone hands you a tiny handmade whale instead of just a glow stick. It’s incredibly sweet in a very human way.
