Project of the Month: Fun Beginner Scarf
This is a great project for the beginner knitter, or the knitter-in-the-know that is looking for a quick and easy gift.
This scarf was developed by our seasonal staff, Laura, when she wanted to offer a quick low-fuss knit kit for those new-ish to knitting. With a little patience and a google-search within reach, this is a perfect beginner pattern for the customers who would like the challenge of teaching themselves how to knit. Although we would recommend you have familiarity with CAST ON, the KNIT STITCH, the SLIP STITCH, CAST-OFF and some skills in fixing your knit-mistakes; all of these BOLDED TERMS can be googled or self-taught with enough determination.
This FUN BEGINNER SCARF can be made as follows:
Materials: 2 skeins of chunky or aran weight yarn (about 130-160 yards each); I used one each of Estelle Colour Flow and Drops Air.
Skills: Understanding (or google research) of the knitting techniques of cast on (CO); knit stitch (K); slip stitch [in particular the] SLIP ONE WITH YARN IN THE FRONT(sl1 wyif); and bind off (BO)
Pattern:
CO (cast on) 27 stitches [Want wider? Increase by 4 sts, but it will make a shorter scarf, or use 3 balls]
Row 1 (right side): *K3, sl1 wyif* repeat across until 3 stitches left, then K3
Row 2 (wrong side): K1, sl1 wyif, then *K3, sl1 wyif* repeat across until 2 stitches left, then across until 3 stitches left, then sl1 wyif, K1
BO (bind off) when you have 3 metres of yarn left. Doesn’t matter what row you end on.

And that’s it! Some hints:
- Google the following terms: ‘cast on + knitting’; ‘learn knit stitch’; ‘sl1 wyif + knitting’; ‘cast off + knitting’
- Mark your right side (row one) with a removeable stitch marker so you will always know if you are on row 1 or 2
I put a removeable stitch marker on the RIGHT SIDE so I always know that I am on Row 1 on this side. - ‘sl1 wyif’ has a good tutorial on youtube but there’s many ways to knit so if you don’t understand one tutorial, keep googling!
- If you run out of yarn, stripe in another a different colour! (I saved 5 metres of yarn at the end of the first ball to stripe a 2 row x 2 row stripe TWICE
- The hardest thing about beginner knitting is fixing your mistakes. This comes with practice, and you need to give yourself the patience and permission to be okay with imperfection on beginner projects. The best way to learn how to spot and fix mistakes is in in-person classes, such as this one at our store, or this one at our sister store.
- Be kind to yourself and enjoy!
For anyone keeping track, this is FO project #18 of my #baaad24in24 !
I love this no-purl scarf pattern! And the absolutely no-itch yarns you used. I’m wondering what sz needle you used. Thanks!
I believe I used US8, 5mm!
