Choose Your Own Yarnventure
The trees are bare now, and the sidewalks are carpeted in colour. Maybe the air smells like rain again, or maybe it’s just that familiar itch in your hands, the one that says: time to make something. Between Baaad Anna’s and our woolly sister, Baaad Rabbit, there’s no shortage of ways to spark ideas, build skills, and keep your hands busy all season long.
Here’s a little quiz to see where your knitting compass is pointing this season:
1. The air’s crisp, the days are shorter, and someone on your street has already switched on their twinkle lights. How are you feeling?
A) Mildly betrayed. Summer just packed up and left without so much as a goodbye. You saw someone in a hand-knit toque at my coffee shop and did a double take. Isn’t it still September?
B) Honestly? Kind of excited. You’ve been eyeing that half-finished scarf from last winter and thinking: maybe it’s time to go bigger this year. A sweater, perhaps? Something you can brag about at family dinner.
C) Thrilled. The drop in temperature means it’s officially sweater-weather and you’ve got a WIP list longer than you’d like to admit. Plus, you’ve been itching to try that beautiful skein you impulse-bought from the last sale.
2. Your dear friend having a milestone birthday. You stop by the shop to pick up a present.
Do you…
A) Stare lovingly at the hand-knit toques and think, if only I knew how to do that. You picture the look on your friends face if you gifted her something you made yourself.
B) Wander toward the mannequin wearing that colourwork sweater and whisper, “One day…” Maybe this fall you’ll actually make that happen.
C) Think, “cute, but I could make this better.” You pop next door for yarn, and somehow walk out with a book about new knitting techniques and a renewed sense of purpose.
3. It’s Tuesday night, your brain’s still buzzing from work, and the kettle’s just boiled. You queue up a crime series and settle in.
Are you…
A) Restless? You wish you had something calm and rhythmic to do with your hands instead of looking at your phone.
B) Immediately distracted by the detective’s sweater. You pause the show to look up “Nordic knitwear pattern” and start planning your next project.
C) Noticing the sidekick’s mittens and wondering if they’re thrummed. Should you finally try that?
So… where will this season take you?
