I’m sure all of our blog readers know that Baaad Anna’s takes yarn donations. While we don’t use the donations ourselves we act as a hub connecting people who are looking for a place for their underloved and overlooked yarn with programs and communities organizations that need them. This is something extra we do in the community, a little something to utilize all the connections we’ve made over the years, taking care of the community that takes care of us.
A few weeks ago while I was elbows deep in a yarn donation, sorting through the bag, a customer came in to purchase yarn to make some Knitted Knockers. She needed a variety of soft cotton in various skin tones. Knitted Knockers are exactly what they sound like: they are a soft, handmade prosthesis typically used by breast cancer survivors who have had mastectomies.
The customer and I got to chatting and I learned she visits clinics where people pick up these handmade Knockers. On top of her purchase I was able to send her off with not only some similar cotton from the donations, but also 24 pairs of completed Knitted Knockers that were collected from our customers who also often drop off finished objects to donate!
Examples of Knitted Knockers.
Acting as a hub we rarely feel the direct impact of all the work that goes into facilitating the donation pick up and drop off, so it was nice that this customer came in just as I was sorting through donations. I know that these Knockers will be added to a basket in a clinic directly for use by the people who need them, and that’s a great feeling.
