Fibre Art Healing Balm

So there’s a time and season for different crafts and projects. Currently I find myself in a new craft horizon where the projects that have given me so much joy for the past few years namely sweaters and socks, slow fashion staples for the knitter, are just not appealing. In the past month I have had a shift where I am dividing my time between work and family hospital visits, and found my appeal to the fibre arts that normally drew me also pivot.

What is Luna hiding?

About two months ago I came across an online pattern for an embroidered felt notions case that peaked my interest. Rachel Austin of The Wishing Shed puts out fun embroidery felt patterns on Etsy and her Patreon, and just launched a new crow sewing case by the name of Luna that has gone viral. Like any shiny object, this one caught my eye but in truth I didn’t think I was ready to step into a completely new lane. I don’t have a supply of felt or beading materials or huge know-how, and certainly am not as detail orientated as fine needlework demands.

But these embroidery projects are one of the two projects that have held my focus for the past month, and I feel it may carry on through this upcoming summer. I was gifted a set of all materials for Luna from my lovely friend Ruth and suddenly at a hospital bedside I found myself immersed in the details of choosing freshwater pearls over glass beads.

I gave myself the leeway of not being particular as to how perfect my embroidery be, and became mesmerized by finding the exact size and shape of knit tools I wanted to hide in my Luna notions case. Before I knew it, she was complete; and in some cosmic coordination just as I finished Rachel put out a new fanciful snowy owl pattern named Orwin that had the perfect-sized wing pocket would hide our new miniature Thread & Maple tape measure that I couldn’t seem to fit in my Luna, so off I went with another new project!

Orwin in the works.
