Beach please

Today’s tale from the yarn store, a customer came in looking for yarn for a friend who wanted something “beachy.” She asked what I thought that meant, which honestly feels like such a fibre arts question because everyone interprets colour so differently.

My mind immediately went to this one Bramble Ridge sock yarn, a creamy base with earthy shell-like speckles and this soft wash of blue running through it. The funny part? The colourway was literally called Salt Air. Couldn’t have matched the assignment better.Meghan has an amazing eye for colour. Her palettes are inspired by everything from nature to the small details of everyday life. Many of her colourways are even named after her kids, which makes the skeins feel that much more personal.

It made me realize how much yarn colours can hold entire moods and memories. When I looked it up it was confirming to find out colours hold core memories, they act as powerful memory triggers, and significantly influence how we encode and recall information. Colours increase our attentional level, making it more likely that information associated with a colour is transferred to long-term memory. i guess that’s why some skeins feel like forests, some feel like old bookstores, and apparently some feel like sitting near the ocean with salty hair and sandy shoes.

Also… little heads up for the sock yarn lovers, we’ve got a BIG Bramble Ridge top-up arriving soon . And even better there’s a brand new linen/merino base on the way too. Perfect for spring/summer knitting.

You heard it here first.

If you asked me to suggest a yarn that reminds me of a sour lemon lollipop – maybe that’s why it’s called Pucker.. the face you make when you eat one.
This colour way is called Philippine Kingfisher and if you have never seen one I urge you to do a quick image search because they’re so sweet.
If you asked me on the spot what Chill reminds me off the first thing that comes to mind would be my evening walks and admiring the lilacs  in bloom. A friend of mine has a stunning curtain of lilacs on her porch and it makes me so happy, I’d love to have a pair of socks to remind me of that feeling.
I would genuinely love to know the story behind the name Don’t Be Jelly because it somehow suits the colour perfectly. It feels playful, nostalgic like there’s definitely a story there.
