Copperspoon has a newer series of yarn called the Salmonoid Series. This collection was created out of a love for the iconic BC keystone species. Each skein is dyed to look like our many local salmon species.

Each colourway is named for the different salmon in their different lifecycles in the SENĆOŦEN language, spoken by the W̱SÁNEĆ People whose territory spans from what we now call Boundary Bay, the Gulf and San Juan Islands, and the Saanich Peninsula and Saanich Inlet (home to many of the salmon species in this province!). There’s a great SENĆOŦEN language resource that you can find here, with the proper pronunciation of the colourway names if you are unfamiliar. I had a lot of fun going through and learning something new!

Now, over the last few years, some of our salmon populations are bouncing back, but very few are where we would like to see them based on our historical records (take a look at this very cool interactive data visualization from the Pacific Salmon Foundation). The volunteer team at Goldstream Salmon Hatchery are doing their part to protect the Coho and Chum populations of western Vancouver Island. They work to boost the population of salmon in their area, and provide education on why protecting our salmon stocks is so important.

Claire and Tihson, the team behind Copperspoon, also volunteer at the Goldstream Salmon Hatchery.  So for a cause that is very dear to their hearts, Copperspoon donates$2 from every Salmonoid Series skein to the Goldstream Salmon Hatchery, to support their work and in educating about salmon and improving their population numbers!

Paula knit the Storyteller Hat by Lindsay Facine with one skein of the worsted weight Salmonoid Series. We carry the full colour range in both fingering and worsted. One skein of the fingering can obviously be a pair of socks, and one skein of the worsted can make a hat, but we’ve actually seen the yarns be quite popular for baby knits this summer.
