The Beauty of Cables

There is just something about cables that adds so much texture, culture and magic to a knitting project.

The origins of knitting cables can be traced back to the Aran Islands, a tiny group of islands off the coast of Ireland. What started as the locally popular Aran sweaters worn by fisherman to keep them warm on the seas has evolved into intricate cables twisting in and out of designs and colourwork. Cables can be found adorned on hats, sweaters and socks and beyond resembling Celtic knots to tree trunks and branches that seem to grow out from the project.

Our lovely store manager Sarah is a cable pro! Here are just a few of her beautiful projects she has made over the past year.

Whether you are new to cables or ready for the next challenge we have a class for you! Join Rebecca Glazier and enjoy her warm, fun and expertise instruction in our online classes with a focus on cables including the brand new Beyond the Basics: Colourwork and Cables – Online via Zoom.

Learn the magic of combining colourwork along with cables in this beautiful Norrland hat by Sara Huntington Burch.

The pattern “makes use of cables and stranded colorwork at the same time to represent the entwining branches of winter trees in the snow at twilight. The combination of these two methods puts a new spin on the standard fair isle…”

∼Sara Huntington Burch

Rebecca has adapted the pattern to include a smaller size smaller as well as adding a rolled stockinette border.
