It’s Local Yarn Store Day!
Here in East Van, spring is slowly stretching its legs. There’s something about this season that makes knitters restless in the best way. We’re itching to cast on something fresh, wander the neighbourhood in lighter layers, and rediscover what’s been quietly blooming while we were wrapped in wool.
And as we settle into the season, there’s one day on the fibre calendar that always feels worth pausing for: Local Yarn Store Day!
It’s a celebration not just of yarn, but of the spaces that bring makers together. The little havens tucked between coffee shops and corner stores. The places where friendships are cast on and creative sparks fly.
As someone lucky enough to work in a yarn store (and even luckier to call Baaad Anna’s a second home), I’ve seen firsthand how these spaces matter. They’re not just about what’s on the shelves, though the shelves are lovely, don’t get me wrong – they’re about the people, the stories, the slow conversations about gauge and colour that turn into something more meaningful.
I’m also lucky in another way: I do get to travel, and whenever I do, I make it a point to seek out the local yarn store. Whether I’m in a big city or a small town, there’s always a spot with skeins stacked high, swatches on the walls, and that unmistakable feeling of walking into somewhere you belong, even if it’s your first visit. Each local yarn store tells the story of its community and no two are the same. But they all share something in common: they’re built with care, by people who love this craft and want to share it.
That’s why Local Yarn Store Day feels so important. It’s a reminder.
A reminder to support what’s close to home.
A reminder that shopping small keeps your neighbourhood creative.
A reminder that yarn stores are about more than yarn.
So wherever you find yourself this weekend, whether you’re near East Van or halfway across the globe – take a moment to step inside a local yarn store. Ask questions. Touch the yarn. Say hi to the person behind the counter. You never know what treasure or idea you might walk away with.
And if you’re already a Baaad Anna’s friend: thank you. We’re so lucky to be part of your making journey.
