Feature Yarn #3 – Mailles à Part

Some yarns have the quiet confidence of knowing they will be noticed without trying. Mailles à Part brings that kind of presence.

Mailles à Part is the creation of two Québec dyers, Jacinthe Pellerin and Catherine Harvey, who have been close friends for over 15 years. United by their shared love of knitting, they began dyeing in 2019 to channel their creative energy into hand-dyed yarns that balance softness, vibrancy, and playfulness. The name “stitches apart” reflects the 60 km that separates them geographically, but also celebrates the unique perspectives they each bring to their colourways. Jacinthe gravitates toward warm, gentle tones, while Catherine loves bold, saturated shades. Together, their complementary styles create a collection of yarns that are as versatile as they are inspiring, offering knitters everything from cozy neutrals to statement colours.

Our shelves currently hold three of their standouts: Nuage d’alpaga, a suri base that is as soft and weightless as its name suggests, Yak Sock, a blend that combines the resilience of sock yarn with the gentle warmth of yak down and a BFL Steel Sock base, durable yet soft blend of superwash BFL wool and nylon.

Nuage feels like holding a cloud that has been spun into thread. The suri alpaca fibres give it a long, silky halo and a drape that makes scarves, wraps, and loose sweaters fall just right. It is the kind of yarn you keep picking up, even when you are not swatching, simply to enjoy the touch.

Yak Sock offers something entirely different. The natural properties of yak give the yarn a soft, slightly rustic depth, while the merino and nylon in the blend ensure it holds up to the workhorse demands of socks. The result is a yarn that feels indulgent but wears with practicality, making it just as suited to shawls and lightweight sweaters as it is to that favourite pair of winter socks.

The BFL Steel Sock base a durable yet soft blend of superwash BFL wool and nylon, this 4-ply fingering weight yarn is designed to stand up to wear while still feeling gentle against the skin. Its strength makes it an excellent choice for socks, while its softness and drape lend themselves beautifully to shawls, accessories, and lightweight garments. For added versatility, hold it double with our Nuage d’Alpaga base for a touch of airy luxury, or strand two skeins of BFL Steel Sock together to achieve a DK weight, perfect for cozy sweaters and heavier accessories. This yarn balances practicality and elegance, making it a go-to staple for many projects.

I began working with Mailles à Part to bring in Canadian voices from outside the West Coast. Quebec’s fibre community has its own rhythms, palettes, and inspirations, and these yarns carry that regional character beautifully. From the icy blues of a February river to the warm browns of late autumn leaves, the colours tell a story of place.

Mailles à Part is not simply another yarn line on our shelves. It is a connection to another part of the Canadian fibre landscape, brought to life through fibres that make you want to cast on the moment you see them.
